Weight loss is a goal many people struggle to achieve. Magazines, TV and other forms of media have been relentless in giving tips to lose weight and battle obesity. However, although people are taking in these tips seriously, nobody really seems to realize the full impact of losing weight. Most of us only do it for physical reasons - the promise of a well formed physique. But the truth is, obesity is also a health reason.

Note that the word is "obesity", not overweight. People seem to confuse these two words. The fact is, overweight only means you have excess body mass while obesity is having more than 20 percent of the recommended body mass in relation to your weight and height. According to the World Health Organization's estimation, more than 25 percent of people infected by cancer are overweight and have very minimal physical activity. Fat promotes the development of insulin and estrogen which in turn heightens cell division. And as we all know, the faster these cells divide, the larger is the possibility of cancer. Worse, fat cells usually contain cancer causing substances, doubling the chance of cancer development. Some of the most probably cancer that can be infected through excess fat are breast cancer, renal cell cancer, endometrial cancer and prostate cancer.

Stroke

The buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries of the body causes slower blood flow and increases blood clotting. When these arteries are blocked by the accumulation of fat, blood will fail to reach parts of the body which could lead to serious injuries on that body part. This is especially true when blood passage to the brain is clogged, resulting in serious injuries such as stroke.

Problems in the respiratory system The clogging of fat in the body might induce the lungs to become smaller in order to make way for the extra weight. Because of this, the chest will be harder to lift, causing difficulty in breathing. Sometimes, this condition will lead to sleep apnea where one stops breathing during a particularly deep sleep. Because it concerns bodily tissues, there is no medical cure for sleep apnea aside from losing weight.

Diabetes

Diabetes is because of eating high glycemic foods that increase glucose in the body. When the body accumulates too much fat, the normal amount of insulin produced by the body is no longer enough to accommodate the fat. Hence, type-two diabetes occurs. This condition is one of the leading causes of death in some countries and hence must be taken seriously.

Urinary Problems

Excessive body mass can sometimes cause the urinary bladder to grow weak, resulting in an involuntary release of urine. If you sneeze or cough and you could feel yourself releasing urine, then chances is you're urinary bladder is already being pressured by excess body weight.

Others include the development of varicose veins, high blood pressure, gout, prenatal mortality, osteoarthritis, maternal hypertension and lower back pains.

These are only some of the reasons why you should think about losing weight right now. It is amazing how many diseases you can avoid by simply losing weight and maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
